"Quilts are important because they are one of the few tangible legacies that women leave. In the biblical words given by American write Eliza Calvert Hall to Aunt Jane of Kentucky, most women's work "perishes with the usin'". The houses cleaned, the food cooked, the washing and ironing done, the dishes made shining, the gardens grown, and the clothing made and mended - all are work which disappears with time - in often a matter of only minutes or hours."- Margaret Rolfe

"It's so hard to think of her dying there when her family members are free. There are whales over 90 years old in the population and there is a good chance she could eventually be released from the sea pen successfully. If not, at least she would have room to swim and breathe fresh cool air and feel the rain and hear her native language spoken."-
Unbearably sad comment on this 'Blackfish' review. (via clambistro)
I have SO MANY complicated feelings about orcas in captivity and attempts to return them to the wild. When I was little I LOVED Free Willy and was totally obsessed with Keiko and followed all of the news on the attempts to reintroduce him to the wild. 11 year old me was stoked that it was possible! Free all the whales! Send them back to where they came from and they'll be happy!
My sister was in Norway in 2002 and went for a drive along the coast with her friends, along the fjords north of my grandparents' home town. They stopped for lunch and were enjoying the view when who should appear but KEIKO HIMSELF (evident from his depressingly floppy dorsal fin) followed by his support boat.
The locals, used to his presence, explained to my sister that they thought Keiko couldn't manage in the wild on his own, and came to Norway looking for people and company. He swam up and down the fjord breaching and waving at the boats and people on the shore. She has photos of him from a distance - waving his fins in the air.
A year and a half later he was dead and they took his body out of the sea and buried it near Halsa. Isn't that the saddest fucking thing? If only it was so easy to send them home again. They should never have been taken from the sea. It's too sad.
